Journey of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Adhyatmik Kendra, Kolhapur
"The water of the ocean rises as vapour, forms a cloud, and finally returns to merge into the ocean again. The cloud carries within itself a deep longing for the source from which it came. When it meets the ocean, the thunder appears like a joyful expression of reunion."
This beautiful imagery reflects the spiritual journey of the Ramakrishna Vivekananda Adhyatmik Kendra, Kolhapur (RVAK). The Kendra, which began as a small center inspired by the ideals of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda, ultimately became affiliated with the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, Howrah, on 2 June 2024.
The long-awaited union of the “cloud” with the “ocean” became a reality — the merging of a devoted spiritual movement in Kolhapur with the worldwide Ramakrishna Order.
The Beginning: A Seed of Devotion (1984)
The seed of RVAK was planted in 1984 in the Sathmari area of Kolhapur, when devotees inspired by the life and message of Swami Vivekananda began the Vivekananda Sangh. The movement was founded through the dedication and devotion of local spiritual seekers who wished to spread the ideals of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.
At Sathmari, a primary school was also functioning in the same building, which made regular spiritual activities such as Sandhya Arati, meditation, and talks by visiting monks difficult to conduct. Recognising the need for a dedicated spiritual space, devotees arranged a new place at the Gomata Temple in the Panjarpol area of Kolhapur.
With great effort and devotion, a temporary structure was created by the devotees, and in 1985 the Bhavadhara Kendra (Private Centre) was registered as the Ramakrishna Vivekananda Adhyatmik Kendra. The Board of Trustees was registered in 1986.
From its early days, the Kendra undertook various spiritual and service activities according to its capacity, including:
- Spiritual retreats and devotional gatherings
- Lectures on the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother, and Swami Vivekananda
- Sale of spiritual literature
- Educational support for needy students
- Medical service activities
The devotees received valuable guidance from Srimat Swami Bhaumanandaji Maharaj, the then President of Ramakrishna Math, Pune. His encouragement helped strengthen the spiritual activities of the centre and inspired devotees to spread the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda ideals throughout Kolhapur and Sangli districts and the neighbouring regions.
Monks from Pune Math regularly visited Kolhapur to deliver spiritual discourses, while local devotees conducted study circles and classes on the teachings of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda movement.
The Sacred Connection between Swami Vivekananda and Kolhapur
Swami Vivekananda visited Kolhapur in 1892, leaving behind a lasting spiritual impression on the city. To commemorate his visit, devotees took up the noble initiative of installing a statue of Swamiji during the centenary year of his visit.
A committee of dedicated devotees was formed, and funds were collected from citizens, educational institutions, government offices, and villages with great enthusiasm.
Initially, the statue was planned at Rankala Lake, inspired by the famous statue of Swami Vivekananda at Kanyakumari. Due to practical difficulties, the location was later changed to the beautiful Hutatma Park.
The dream of the devotees was fulfilled when the statue was unveiled on 21 April 1995 by Srimat Swami Gahananandaji Maharaj, the then Vice-President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math.
During the inauguration ceremony, Swami Gahananandaji Maharaj expressed the hope that Kolhapur would one day have a branch of Ramakrishna Math. His inspiring words awakened a renewed determination among devotees to work towards this sacred goal.
Every year on National Youth Day (12 January), devotees gather at Hutatma Park to worship Swami Vivekananda and celebrate his message of strength, service, and spiritual awakening. The programme is also supported by the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and includes cultural activities for school children.
Preserving the Memory of Swamiji
Swami Vivekananda stayed in the Khasbag area of Kolhapur from 10 October to 15 October 1892. To honour this sacred association, the road connected with his stay was renamed “Swami Vivekananda Marg.”
Later, through the sincere efforts of devotees, another major road from Mirajkar Tikti to Kalamba was also renamed Swami Vivekananda Marg, keeping alive the memory of Swamiji’s visit to Kolhapur.
The Search for a Permanent Home
Following the inspiration received from Swami Gahananandaji Maharaj, devotees began searching for land to establish a permanent centre of Ramakrishna Math in Kolhapur.
A suitable 12-acre piece of land was identified at Kalamba village in Karveer Taluka. After prolonged discussions and negotiations, the land was finally acquired in the year 2000 through the generosity of late Shri Anandrao Gaikwad and his family.
A touching incident during this period strengthened the faith of devotees. Late Smt. Sushilabai Gaikwad, the mother of Shri Anandrao Gaikwad, who was least aware about the Holy Mother, had a vision of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi in a dream. She felt that the land was meant for the sacred purpose of establishing a centre dedicated to the ideals of Sri Ramakrishna, and encouraged her son to complete the transaction.
A New Centre at Rajarampuri
In 2002, due to difficulties in continuing activities at Panjarpol, devotees faced the challenge of finding a more suitable location.
By divine grace, a devotee came forward and acquired an independent plot with an old house in Rajarampuri, a centrally located area of Kolhapur. The old structure was replaced by a new building designed for spiritual and service activities.
The new centre at Rajarampuri was inaugurated on 18 January 2011 by Srimat Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj, the then Vice-President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
The new premises provided greater opportunities for:
- Spiritual discourses and retreats
- Devotional gatherings
- Study circles
- Sale of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda literature
- Service activities for underprivileged communities
Educational and welfare activities expanded in areas such as Rajendra Nagar, Kolhapur and Udgiri village in Shahuwadi Taluka. It would not be out of place to mention here that through this centre many eye-camps and eye operations of needy patients were organised in the villages of Kolhapur district.
Srimat Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj initiated sixty devotees at the centre on 4 April 2017.
A Blessed Centre of Spiritual Service
Kolhapur, revered as a Shaktipeeth due to the presence of Goddess Ambabai, has been blessed with visits from many senior monks of the Ramakrishna Order from all-over India.
Several revered monks of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission visited the centre and guided devotees through spiritual talks, personal guidance, and inspiration. Their presence strengthened the spiritual atmosphere of the Kendra.
Some prominent names are- Srimat Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, the then General Secretary, Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, Srimat Swami Vagishanandaji Maharaj, the then trustee of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, Srimat Swami Suviranandaji Maharaj, the General Secretary, Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, Srimat Swami Muktidanandaji Maharaj, trustee of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, and Srimat Swami Tatwavidanandaji Maharaj, Asstt. Geneal Secretary of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, Srimat Swami Purushottamanandaji Maharaj, the then head of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Belagavi, Srimat Swami Raghveshanandaji Maharaj, Head, Ramakrishna Math, Ooty, Srimat Swami Atmaprananandaji Maharaj, Head, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Belagavi. Sadhu Nivas and Future Vision
A residence for monks, (Sadhu Nivas), was constructed at the Kalamba campus in 2015 and inaugurated by Srimat Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj.
The devotees also nurtured the dream of constructing a grand universal temple of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna at Kalamba. As a step towards this vision, nearly one thousand teak trees were planted in 2002, keeping in mind the future requirement of timber for the temple.
The Divine Fulfilment: Affiliation with Belur Math
The journey towards affiliation with Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, required years of dedication, patience, and devotion. The process involved navigating various administrative and legal challenges across state boundaries.
The Kendra received invaluable guidance and support from senior monks of the Ramakrishna Order, whose blessings helped make this dream possible. The task of affiliation was difficult, however, the RVAK was blessed to have the blessings, guidance and active assistance of the Srimat Swami Bhumanandaji Maharaj, the then President of Pune Math, Srimat Swami Brahmasthanandaji Maharaj, the then President of Nagpur Math, Srimat Swami Vishnupadanandaji Maharaj, Head, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, C. Sambhaji Nagar, Srimat Swami Srikantanandaji Maharaj, Adhyaksha, Ramakrishna Math, Pune.
Finally, by the grace of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda, and through the prayers and dedicated efforts of countless devotees, the Ramakrishna Vivekananda Adhyatmik Kendra, Kolhapur, was affiliated to the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, on 2 June 2024.
A Prayer of Gratitude
This sacred milestone is the result of the selfless dedication, devotion, and prayers of generations of devotees — many of whom are no longer physically present but whose service and love continue to inspire the centre.
